Although dreams remain the classical illustrative evidence in psychoanalytic clinical papers, the pendulum which Ella Freeman Sharpe observed swinging away from psychoanalytic interest in dream interpretation in 1937 has never swung back (Sharpe 1937: 67).
In this same publication he lamented the waning of interest in the dream, as measured by the disappearance of a special section 'On dream interpretation', from the International journal of Psycho-Analysis (1932: 8).
As many present- day analysts lament (see Brenner, this volume), Freud never fully re-wrote the theory of dream interpretation to bring it in its entirety within the framework of later conceptualizations, most specifically the structural model of the mind.
It was in the course of these psycho-analytic studies that I came upon dream interpretation.
Over and over, Freud admonishes the dream interpreter not to be misled by the manifest content, but to seek out the latent dream thought through the dreamer's associations to fragments of the dream.
